Coach Val Lichtenstein Memorial Scholarship

The East Stroudsburg Softball Little League (ESSLL) focuses on supporting the growth and development of girls aged 4 through 16 both on and off the field. As our players age out of the league, we want to provide them with an opportunity to support their chosen education path. As such, we created the Coach Val Lichtenstein Memorial Scholarship in honor of Coach Val, who was taken from us far too early.

Coach Val was a kind, passionate man dedicated to hard work and enjoying life. He found ways to motivate his players and maintained a spirited, positive attitude, no matter the circumstance. He exemplified the traits we try to instill in all our girls – perseverance, courage, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Each year, a memorial softball tournament is held to honor Coach Val’s memory. The proceeds of team registrations from the annual Coach Val Memorial Tournament provide funding for $750 scholarships to two eligible High School Seniors from the East Stroudsburg Area School District (ESASD) or Notre Dame High School.

Scholarship Details

• Application period: Opens on March 1, 2024, and closes on May 15, 2024.
• All applications MUST be received by 11:59 pm ET on the closing date.
• Scholarship awardees will be selected within one month of the application period's close.
• Notification to scholarship awardees: June 30, 2024.
• Award funds disbursed within 60 days of the decision date.
• Two (2) scholarships will be awarded annually: For 2024, each valued at $750.
• Eligibility: Current or former player of ESSLL in good standing.

Eligibility Requirements

• Member of the ESASD/Notre Dame Class of 2024.
• Current or former player of ESSLL in good standing.
• Attending college or trade school within one year of the scholarship award.

Decision Process

• The ESSLL Board will choose scholarship awardees using an anonymized process, removing applicant names and identifying information from the essay.
• If a player applying for the scholarship is related to any ESSLL Board member, that Board member will NOT be eligible to vote or influence the decision.
• The decision of the ESSLL Board is final.
